Day 22: Vancouver to Olympia, A Day in the Car - July 6

At Delany's Coffee House where Lori works
Once we all got up and packed our belongings, we went to a wonderful breakfast at the Bakehouse in the Dundarave village of West Vancouver, across the street from the coffee shop Lori manages.  We hit the road thinking we would have tons of time to kill before meeting up with my college friend Julie and her family in Olympia, WA for dinner.  As it turned out we spent almost the entire day in the car – in the congestion getting over the border, stopping for a quick bite at the co-op grocery store in Mt. Vernon, and then hitting rush hour traffic in Seattle and Tacoma.  We didn’t pull up to Julie’s house until after 6pm.   Julie and I were part of the same freshman sponsor group at Pomona 29 years ago!  Our lives since then, though different in many ways, have coincided on some pretty major milestones…we both married in the summer of ’95, both had our first children in the summer of ’98, and our second in the spring of ’01.  And, we drive the exact same blue Prius!  I’ve seen pictures of her family as they’ve grown over the years in Christmas cards but it was wonderful to meet them all in person and be able to picture them in their lives in Washington.  Of course it is never enough time to catch up on so much of life, but we were grateful for their hospitality… and our only home-cooked meal of the trip!
